CASE SCENARIO PEACE OF MIND

Business Challenge
  • Unforeseen capital expenditures required to maintain operation of a manufacturing plant can significantly harm the profitability of a company
  • High fluctuation in maintenance costs year-over-year make it difficult to plan a budget and have adequate personnel on site at a manufacturing plant
  • Product quality can suffer when plant personnel are sidetracked with problems in plant utilities such as cooling towers
Solution
  • SPX provides rapid response maintenance services to attend to cooling tower problems of a wide range of scope and complexity
  • SPX replaces specific mechanical components upon failure with no material cost to the customer
Results
  • The customer acquires peace of mind knowing that any cooling tower problems are handled quickly and decisively by specialized cooling tower technicians
  • A fixed maintenance budget is maintained year-over-year, allowing the plant to control the cost of non-core resources
  • The plant maintenance team is now able to focus its time and resources on product quality and other high priority plant maintenance projects

Consistency is one of the keys to success for most manufacturing companies. Plant managers want to make consistent high quality products, maintain consistent costs, and have consistent day-to-day operations at their site.

The customer in this case is a global company that produces plastic resins for use in packaging applications. Such complex manufacturing operations generate a lot of heat and other complications. Any small deviation from standard process conditions could generate hours of inferior product quality.

After years of occasional failures due to insufficient maintenance and the resulting unpredictable maintenance costs, the customer considered implementing a regular preventive maintenance program for its cooling towers. It trusted SPX Cooling Technologies to perform the cost-benefit analysis of such a program.

However, before any such program could be implemented, the customer suffered a disastrous, quarter million dollar failure of four cooling tower cells as a result of poor maintenance.

Consequentially, the plant decided that the SPX service program would be a perfect fit to prevent such failures in the future. For a fixed fee, the customer receives frequent pre-planned maintenance that includes thorough inspections of each cell at the plant and SPX replaces specific mechanical components upon failure, significantly reducing unexpected costs at the facility.

The greatest value that the customer has received is peace of mind. Today, whenever they encounter a cooling tower challenge they cannot manage themselves, they simply call SPX Cooling Technologies, knowing that the problem will be resolved by a leader in cooling tower technology.

CASE SCENARIO BENEFITS OF A PARTNERSHIP

Business Challenge
  • Without scheduled preventive maintenance, aging cooling towers can deteriorate in performance, placing considerable risk on plant processes
  • Petrochemical customers are particularly challenged considering the large number of cooling towers required at their sites
  • Plant maintenance crews often have limited time and resources to properly care for the towers
Solution
  • SPX can establish an on-site team of experienced cooling tower technicians to care for the towers
  • SPX will make preventive maintenance a priority and implement proactive processes to optimize cooling tower operation
Results
  • Plant maintenance crew time and resources will be free to handle other pressing priorities on site

Despite the critical role that cooling towers play in maintaining steady-state operation, large petrochemical customers sometimes have more important priorities than maximizing cooling tower performance.

Such companies could have anywhere from 10 to 100 or more cooling towers on site that dissipate heat from plant processes. Proper care and maintenance is required, and without dedicated crews to sustain peak performance, plant utilization could suffer.

One particular SPX customer historically used an in-house maintenance crew for upkeep of its on-site equipment and systems. However, as it became increasingly difficult for them to keep the cooling towers in peak operating condition, they sought a more efficient method of maintaining their cooling towers.

Having been a long-time customer, with the majority of its cooling towers being Marley towers, SPX Cooling Technologies took over cooling tower operations at the customer’s plant. In providing on-site coverage, SPX made preventive maintenance a priority, implementing proactive processes to maintain optimal performance.

Because of SPX, the customer now has the opportunity to concentrate its attention and resources on other important matters that affect product quality and smooth operation of the plant.

CASE SCENARIO PROACTIVE PREVENTION

Business Challenge
  • To provide consistent electric power for transmission, utilities require steady-state performance of their cooling towers to dissipate heat from the reactor
  • Regardless of age, cooling towers at power plants require scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure steady, reliable performance
Solution
  • SPX can provide skilled labor and resources to perform tower inspections to check the condition and performance of all mechanical components on each cell
Results
  • Regular pre-scheduled inspections can help a power plant prevent unexpected outages, reducing the risk of interruptions of power production

Peak-load power plants are critical to a utility’s ability to supply steady-state electricity to the power grid.

When an increase in power production is required, it is critical that the cooling towers are ready to serve the needs of the plant on quick notice.

One particular SPX customer operated a 600 MW coal-fired power plant with three cooling towers. Unfortunately, one of the site’s cooling towers was an older unit in poor condition as well as being an inappropriate design for the plant's increased cooling needs.

The aging unit was replaced with a Marley F600 fiberglass cooling tower.

To protect its new investment, the customer collaborated with SPX to develop a customized service plan that would maximize the performance of the tower.

A team of skilled Marley personnel now visits the new tower and performs general preventive and mechanical maintenance work on a pre-scheduled basis.

With SPX coverage, all 12 cells of the new tower are in peak condition, and since the start of the service plan, there have been no major issues that have hampered the performance of the cooling tower.

An added benefit of the EXTEND service plan has been giving the customer the peace of mind they need to focus on more pressing matters.
